Winter Chores

January 25, 2010

January and February are the best months to

  • prune and trim trees; be thinking ahead to typhoon season and get rid of dead wood and unweildy branches;
  • plant and move trees and bushes; this is a great time to find out if there are any "green auctions" in your area to purchase low cost landscaping plants; planting now allows trees to settle in and be in place when their growth cycle begins in the spring;
  • pull the weeds out of the lawn; most lawns are dormant and brown so weeds are easy to spot; complex root systems are easier to remove when the lawn is not so strong;
  • remove unwanted weed patches or grasses now, while plants are weaker, till the soil so small weeds will die in the next couple of frosts, reducing weed growth in the spring.
